I'm happy to play them, plus we are having our planing, in the physical training, so those two projects are going together. We maintain the level, or increase the level, of physical training. as well. So what we are looking [for], the ideal situation, that is, the technical
skillful player, and the speedy player, and the powerful player. -2001년

요즘에는 아무리 기술이 좋아도 스피드,
템포, 경기 흐름, 힘, 지구력 등 이러한 모든 것을 따라가지 못한다면 2류 선수 밖에
되지 못하며 계약 시에도 어려움이 따를 것이다. 그렇게 되면 현대 축구에서 살아남을
수 없다. 우리가 찾는 가장 이상적인 경우는 기술이 뛰어나면서도, 빠르고 강한 선수인
것이다.
이렇게도 말할 수 있어요.
"You may be a technically skillful player, but if you cannot keep up with the speed, the tempo, the force of the game; If you don't have things like power and endurance, you may be a second-rate player. The ideal candidate for us is a technically skilled player with speed and power."
They have to catch up very hard. 열심히 따라잡아야 한다.

Especially the foreign-based players are having some problems in the beginning,
and six, seven months ago it was the other way round, that Korean-based players,
they had some problems to catch up with the foreign-based players. Now it's
the other way round, because we made a long preparation in which Korean-based
players got a lot of advantages in strong and tough training sessions, and in

4월, 체력 훈련 중
특히, 처음에는 해외파 선수들에게 문제가 있었다. 예닐곱
달 전에는 국내파 선수들이 그들을 따라잡는 데 애를 먹었다. 그러나 국내파 선수들은
고되고 강도 높은 훈련 과정과 거친 실전경기들을 거치며 오랫동안 준비할 수 있었고
이제는 그때와 정반대가 되었다.

"The foreign-based players are having some problems at the beginning, but six months ago it was the other way around, and the Korea-based players were in difficulty. But we worked a lot with the Korea-based players, and they benefited from tough training and tough matches."

on their attacking role, but they never made big successes in the team. So that
role has changed. Everyone must, to play that, you must play that, internationally.

This is good, it's just a pity we can't make one more match but they got good
experience, the players, they did very well. In competition, toughness and getting
the experience for my players, it's much more important than good, good results
in this moment.

체코와의 평가전을 앞두고
우리는 수비와 미드필드 진영의 공격 모두에서 경기를
압도했다. 잘 했다. 한 번 더 경기를 할 수 없는 것은 아쉽지만 우리 선수들은 좋은
경험을 했으며 잘 뛰어 주었다. 지금 이 순간 강인함과 실전 경험은 우리 선수들에게
있어 좋은 경기 결과보다 훨씬 더 중요하다.

If you want to figure if it's D minus fifty, then you count down to
forty-nine, forty-eight, etcetera, et cetera until 31st of May, when you were
regarding the Korean team, at every day, one percent go fifty-one, fifty-two,
et cetera, then we are on 31st of May we are at 100 percent, and then the players,
they have to do it.

월드컵 시작 50일 전부터
계산하자면, 5월31일까지 49일, 48일 이렇게 거꾸로 세어나가면 된다. 그리고 한국팀에게

A healthy competition 생산적인 경쟁을 해야

They passed the limit when they don't have any respect for their other competitor.
If there are five strikers competing for one or two positions, and there's no
mutual respect among those five players, then I say that's not the way we deal
with each other, they must have respect and then there can be a very healthy
competition [to find out] who is best...

선수들이
경쟁자들을 존중하지 않는다면, 지켜야 할 선을 넘어선 것이다. 한두 개의 포지션을
두고 경쟁을 하는 공격수가 다섯 명이라고 볼 때 그들이 전혀 상대방을 존중하지
않는다면 서로 그렇게 대해서는 안된다. 그들이 서로 존중할 때 비로소 누가 최고의
주전이 될 것인가를 두고 생산적인 경쟁이 이루어질 것이다.

Enjoyment, and be serious can be in the same quality, I can enjoy it and
be very serious and be very demanding and I'll tell you that then people are
getting more motivated, and then they don't look on the watch and say "Five
to six. I have five minutes to wait then I can go home..." No. When they
are moti-vated they stay longer or they do their mob more pally-pally.

대구 합숙훈련 중에
재미와 진지함은 같은 그릇에 담길 수 있다. 난 즐기기도
하고 매우 심각해지기도 하고, 아주 까다롭게 굴기도 한다. 그러면 선수들은 더욱
흥미를 느껴서 시계를 보며 "6시 5분전이네. 5분만 지나면 집에 갈 수 있어…"
라고 말하지 않게 된다. 아니, 선수들에게 동기를 부여하면 그들은 더 남아 있거나
더 빨리빨리 연습을 하려고 할 것이다.

I can be serious about something and enjoy it at the same time. I can be very demanding as well. When people are motivated they don't look at their watches and say "Five to six. Five more minutes and I can go home."When they are motivated, they stay longer or they do their job more quickly."

When we had a good victory, we had against Costarica for me proved we are
on a good strategy, on a good way because we made good results in the last month.
The players are going to understand more and more and more in a sequence what
I ask from them in the games. So that's not one day a big win, and the other

코스타리카에 맞서 멋진 승리를 거머쥠으로써 우리의 전략과

"A Good victory, such as the one we had in Costa Rica, proves we are on the right track. We have a good strategy and the results to prove it. The players understand the value of what we ask them. Football means a lot to me because working with all kinds of people is a
challenge to me, to bring young people onto a higher level of performance in
a way they have their profits as a player but also as a person, to grow in personality.
It is a challenge for me and I enjoy it very much. It means a lot.

Korean public, I know, they will support us, if we can reach the aim, desired
aim of getting into a good performance in the first round, that's the moment
I will be really happy. I had some happy moments, but then I will, because I'm
so going into the tunnel, and focused on that, that will be real happiness when
we can achieve that together.

생각할 것이다. 나 또한 그러하고 선수의 경력을 존중하지만, 그들은 지금 이 순간
뛰어야 한다. 그것이 연령이나 지위에 관계없이 모든 선수들이 기회를 가질 수 있는
이유이다.

" There's no law saying a player has to be selected just because he has played in a Korean team for a long time, The performance of a player is decisive, not his career. 동안 반나절도 쉬지 않고 매우 힘들게 훈련했다. 그렇기 때문에, 어제의 경기결과에

한국 국민들이 자국팀의 경기를 즐길 수 있기를 바란다.

All Set for the World Cup. 모든 준비가 끝났다.
Frankly speaking, it was difficult for me to make up my mind when I was offered
the coach position in Korea. I was unfamiliar with the country an it was awkward
for me that I had to lead a sweeping victory over the Korean national
team in the France World Cup. At long last, however, I took on the Korean team,
and the Korean people have hopes in me.
한국으로부터 감독직을 제의 받았을
때 솔직히 쉽게 결정을 하지 못했다. 한국이란 나라를 잘 알지도 못할 뿐더러 프랑스
월드컵에서 네덜란드 팀을 이끌고 크게 이겨본 팀이기에 껄끄러웠던 것도 사실이다.
하지만 결국 한국팀을 받았고 한국 국민들의 기대를 받고 있다.
In the past, the Korean team made it to the World Cup five times and never
won. I wanted to put an end to such a record. I will try to turn Korea into
one of the stronger national football teams, and I am doing research at this
very moment. I am working harder than I planed, and the results have been favorable.
과거
한국축구팀은 월드컵에서 다섯 번이나 진출하고도 한번도 승리하지 못했다. 나는
그 같은 기록에 마침표를 찍기를 원한다. 한국이란 나라를 세계축구의 강국으로 이끌기
위해 나는 노력을 할 것이고 지금 이 순간도 연구하고 있다. 처음 마음먹었던 것보다
더 노력하고 있으며 그 진행은 순조롭게 이어져 왔다.
I've never mentioned this before, but my first impression of the national
team was quite a shock, not because of the strength of the players, but because
of their passion. They tried to follow my instructions as thoroughly as possible,
and every one of them was good-natured.
지금에야 하는 말이지만 한국팀의 첫
인상은 가히 충격적이었다. 전력이 높고 낮음이 아니라 한국 선수들의 열정을 말하는
것이다. 그들은 내가 지시하는 점을 충실히 이행하고자 노력했으며 한결같이 착하고
순수했다.
The top player in Europe have strong egos and individuality. Despite their
professionalism, they tend to lack a sense of duty as team members and national
representatives.
유럽의 유명 선수들은 스스로의 생각이 강하고 개성이 탁월하다.
하지만 그들 사이에는 프로라는 의식이 있을 뿐 하나의 팀으로서, 아니 한 국가를
대표하는 스포츠선수로서의 사명감은 많이 떨어지는 것이 사실이다.
I have seen many player who consider the World Cup only as an opportunity
to raise their salary. But the Korean players consider it an honor, and they
would do anything to take part in the World Cup.
월드컵이란 무대를 자신들의
몸값을 높이기 위한 수단으로 여기는 선수들도 많이 봐 왔다. 하지만 한국 선수들은
월드컵 그 자체를 영광으로 생각하고 있으며 그 무대에서 뛰기 위해선 무엇이라도
할 수 있다는 자세를 보여왔다.
This attitude was pretty shocking to me. The level of skills and technique
is not important at all. They can simply try harder to compensate for the lack
of skill.
이러한 한국 선수들의 마음가짐에 적잖은 충격을 받았다. 그들의 실력이
뛰어나든 한 수 아래 떨어지든 그것은 결코 중요하지 않다. 실력이 떨어지면 남보다
더한 노력으로 이를 보충하면 되는 것이다.
The most important thing is the will to do things by oneself. In this respect,
the Korean players are superior to any others in the world. The potential they
showed was something I never experienced before, which made me exert myself
even more.
가장 중요한 것은 스스로 하고 하는 의지이다. 그런 점에서 한국 선수들은
세계 어느 나라선수들보다 우월하다. 그러한 한국축구의 기본잠재력은 일찍이 내가
경험해 보지 못한 것으로, 나 스스로를 더 채찍질하는 계기가 되었다.
I love the team, Their genuineness excites me. I was prepared to accept all
criticism while we got ready. When everyone else was being impatient and cynical,
I was looking ahead to June. The major teams around the world are scornful,
but we don't need to argue with them. We'll just show what we can do in the
World Cup
나는 한국 선수들을 대단히 사랑한다. 그들의 순수함은 나를 들뜨게
한다 준비과정에서 흘러나오는 어떠한 비판도 나는 수용할 자세가 되어 있다. 당신들이
조급한 마음을 가지고 비판의식에 사로잡혀 있을 때 나는 6월을 기다려 왔다. 지금
세계 유명 축구팀들이 우리를 비웃어도 대꾸할 필요는 없다.
I say this with certainty; Whether we make it to the round of 16 or not,
we will be powerful team that will surprise the world. We will continue to train
and let all our energy out in the World Cup in June. I don't want a cheap victory
by excelling over weaker teams. The public might be excited if we took that
road, but ultimately we would be deceiving ourselves.
나는 자신 있게 말할
수 있다. 월드컵에서 16강에 가고 못 가고 를 떠나서 우리는 분명 세계를 놀라게
할 강력한 한국팀이 되어 있을 것이다. 지금의 전력을 더욱 갈고 다듬어서 6월에
있을 본무대에서 모두 폭발시킬 것이다. 내가 원하는 것은 낮은 전력의 팀들을 격파하면서
얻는 값싼 승리가 아니다. 만약 그러한 길을 택했다면 그 과정에서는 나오는 승리로
인해 한국 국민들은 열광하겠지만 그것은 결국 스스로를 기만하는 것이다.
It is necessary to compete with stronger teams if you want to be first-class
team. We should not be afraid to lose. We will go one-on-one with them with
an attitude to learn. If we are defeated in the process the Korean people might
be disappointed. What's important in the end, however, is the honor that accompanies
the World Cup. An unprecedented victory at the World Cup is what I'm hoping
for, and what the Korean people are hoping for.
세계 일류의 팀이 되길 원한다면
더욱 강력한 팀과 싸워 나가야 한다. 질 때 지더라도 두려움을 떨쳐내고 배우고자
하는 자세로 그들과 1대1로 부딪쳐야 한다. 한국 국민들은 그러한 준비에서 나오는
패배로 인해 실망할지 모르겠지만... 결국 중요한 것은 그러한 패배를 통해 얻는
값진 월드컵에서의 영광이다. 지금까지 한번도 이겨보지 못한 월드컵에서의 승리는
내가 원하고 또한 한국 국민들이 원하는 것이다.
The hope of the Korean people is to make it to the round of 16. I have another
hope - that when I leave Korea at the end of June. I will have something much
more wonderful to remember.
한국 국민들이 원하는 16강 진출이 나의 바램은
아니다. 내게는 그 이상의 바램이 있다. 만약 6월을 끝으로 내가 한국을 떠나게 될
지라도... 소중한 추억으로서의 한국이 되었으면 하는 것이 내 바램이다.
It could turn out to be an honorable departure or a disgraceful retirement.
What is certain is that I am the coach of the Korean national team. and I will
continue to be so. We will sur -prise the world at the World Cup. Just wait
and see.
그것이 영광스러운 이별이 될 수도 불명예스러운 퇴진이 될 수도 있을
것이다. 한가지 분명한 것은 나는 지금 한국대표팀의 감독이고 앞으로도 그럴 것이다.
월드컵에서 우리는 분명 세계를 놀라게 할 것이다. 모든 것은 그 때에 알게 될 것이다.
